Over 109,000 people died from measles in 2017 — needlessly

Over the past year cases of measles has been on the rise around the world, with notable outbreaks in the Americas and Europe.  As partners in the Measles & Rubella Partnership Kathy Calvin and Gail McGovern, the CEOs of United Nations Foundation and the American Red Cross, know this all too well.  In an Op-Ed published by CNN they call for renewed commitment towards immunization programs from Ministries of Health, increased surveillance to quickly detect and prevent outbreaks, and for parents everywhere to vaccinate their children from this potential fatal disease.  While significant progress has been made towards eliminating measles, current gaps in immunization could halt progress and once again put children around the world at risk from this vaccine preventable disease.
